A Danger to God Himself by John Draper

indie ebook cover

A Mormon missionary goes insane on his mission and all hell breaks loose. Miraculous occurrences. Various sexual congress. The God of the Universe striking people dead. Mormon missionary Kenny Feller has realized that God isn’t about to give him an ounce of the miracle power he needs to succeed on his mission—as promised. Then his junior companion shows up—the wisecracking Jared Baserman—and immediately starts hearing heavenly voices and seeing fantastic visions. For Kenny, it is immediately clear that God has sent Jared to propel him into Mormon Manhood. Soon enough, interests both virtuous and malevolent cozy up to Kenny and Jared, eager to make use of Jared’s gifting. As Jared’s messages grow more bizarre, Kenny begins to wonder: Is Jared really touched by God? And, if so—does God know what the !#%$@! He is doing? A Danger to God Himself is a hilarious takedown of religious certainty, a life-affirming tale set in 1970s Washington state—equal parts spiritual road map and coming-of-age tale and dark comedy.

John Draper

The interesting thing about this book is that it cost me my religion. When I started writing the book I had been a devout Christian for 30 years. A big part of my motivation was to make Mormons look like idiots.

So I started inviting in the missionaries who would knock on my door. At first, I would lure them into my rhetorical traps. I've read A LOT of books of Mormonism and I know all its logical/theological/philosophical/historical weaknesses.

More and more, though, I got to know them. After a while, they started reminding me of me when it was that age. So sincere. So sure I was right.

Then I started attending a Mormon church under cover.

That's when I lost my religion. I saw that I was just like the Mormons. The only reason I believed what I believed was that someone TOLD me I should believe it.

You don't deduce dogma. You're fed dogma.

So, for now, this is my niche: works based on the theme that religion doesn't work as advertised. My second book will be a collection of humorous essays. My third book will be about a 35-year-old gay man who was raised in a fundamentalist home. All will be dark comedies, mainly because I'm a funny guy.
