An unsettling nocturnal tale for Halloween: ‘3:05 am’

Come, wipe away the encrustations of sleep, and peer through sore and bleary eyes to share in Mark Hillier’s nocturnal visions; bear witness to that which his wife will not believe. The sweat of deep summer night’s fevered breath lent an unseasonal chill.

Mark should be happy, what with a promotion and impending fatherhood in the offing, but instead he is increasingly troubled by what is beamed into his home, courtesy of his portable television set, on a succession of enervating hot summer nights. The images that he witnesses, and the actions that they portray, strike at the very root of his sense of who he is. He may be left perplexed and confused, yet that irritant of a colleague of his – Mike Pearce – seems to know something that he doesn’t. Could there be a hint of the supernatural in the mix, and if so, what, if anything, does Pearce have to do with it, and what does it mean for his future?

A wry mystery novelette, just over 7,500 words in length.

H.E. Bulstrode

H.E. Bulstrode is an English author of tales with a twist that will appeal to the reader possessed of an appreciation for mysteries laced with an element of the supernatural or the occult, and shot through with a pronounced vein of wry humour. To date, six have been published, five gathered together in 'Anthology: Wry Out West', which is available as a Kindle ebook and paperback.

Bulstrode’s debut novel – ‘Pendrummel: Gwen Gwinnel’s Return’ – will be published in the summer of 2017, in both Kindle and paperback formats. The action opens in seventeenth-century Cornwall, where the villagers of Porthcarrack are beset with superstitious fears arising from a report of a supernatural visitation; fears that are dismissed by Thomas Pendrummel, who appears intent to press on with his latest voyage, but at what, if any, cost? An age-old and all-too-real threat, animated by a lurid religious fanaticism, lurks somewhere out to sea, stalking the imaginations of the parishioners.
