Spenser: On The River of Time by Carl Hare

Set in the 16th-Century war between Elizabethan England and the rebels in Ireland is a novel that explores the struggles, power, conflict, politics, and humanity of the last four turbulent months in the life of the great poet, Edmund Spenser. Fleeing the great Munster revolt and fighting to survive the invasion of his home at a terrible cost to his family, he lives as a refugee in Cork.

Riveting and poignant, this historical fiction echoes the political climate and civil strife of a world that is divided and conflicted.

Spenser, book two of the trilogy, takes readers on a poetic odyssey, written in a Spenserian stanza to evoke the Elizabethan period and the poet’s style.

Carl Hare

An actor, a playwright, a professor and a poet, Carl Hare has had a distinguished career in professional theatre. He stepped out of the spotlight and into writing nooks to pen an epic trilogy, On the River of Time.

Readers are taken on a poetic journey that explores the struggles of three men from different time periods, spanning 3,000 years.

His other works include performances of his play, The Eagle and the Tiger and his adaptation of Ibsen’s John Gabriel Borkman; the setting of six of his children’s poems to music by Canadian composer Malcolm Forsyth; a commissioned poem for Forsyth’s A Ballad of Canada, performed by the National Arts Centre Orchestra; and A Weathering of Years, a collection of poetry published in 2015.
