It's Just Not Cricket! by Mike Lord
Have you ever met someone whose appearance changes your life?
Read On: A simple romance where a tall man meets a beautiful girl in a pub in London. The complications are his job as an editor of a publisher of romance books, and her work as a contract window designer! Stories like this have to have a happy ending so get your box of tissues ready!
Caught and Bowled.
William is enjoying a quiet drink in his nearby pub, when he meets Angela and is immediately struck by her loveliness. When she talks to him his offer to buy her a drink turns into dinner in an Indian Restaurant. She is amused by his ham-fisted attempts to seduce her, but amazingly submits – for the first time ever she tells him.
Straight down the Middle.
Angela spends the night with William and explains her multiracial background, and he is overwhelmed, especially as his job is an editor of a paperback romance book publisher.
The Umpires Review.
Angela introduces William to her parents – her mother is Anglo-Indian – who live near Wimbledon and William is inveigled into a game of tennis with her father, whilst her mother is beginning to understand her daughter’s sudden and complete capitulation for William.
Angela explains her work as a contract window dresser, often performing live displays in larger department stores, whilst William himself is struggling with proposed reforms in his own publishing house.
A new bowler.
William decides that Angela is the girl he has been looking for and buys an engagement ring, and a mobile phone for each of them.
Angela introduces William to some of her work colleagues some of whom are models, and they invite him to a display they will be doing at the weekend; whilst at work William is struggling with cost saving proposals.
End of the Innings.
A management meeting in William’s office decides to move the office as a cost saving factor, rather than reduce the quality of editing manuscripts. The climax of the story is William’s proposal to Angela on his knees in front of cameras and the local press.
As William said later “some joker had sent an enlarged photo of him on his knees proposing to Angela to his office”. They travel to meet William’s parents and settle down to live together in William’s flat.
