Two Birds and a Wolf, poems of the last ten years by Cynthia Polutanovich, takes the reader on a series of parallel journeys: the journey of the nomad, the journey of the lover, and the journey of the mystic. Largely autobiographical in nature, these poems, and ostensibly the poet, live in a mythical landscape. Cities, mountaintops, lovers, and human bodies, real as they are, all bear their own magical qualities. But this isn’t a book of sweet poems. As happens in any myth or fairy tale, there are moments of ruthlessness. And the specter of our mortal condition looms largely. This collection functions as a companion piece to her memoir, Impermanent: How I Became a Loveless, Trailer Park Nomad, in that it’s a continuation of those same themes: nomadic living, love, sex, the gods, and a search for a beautiful life outside of consumerism. And, like the memoir, this book of poems takes the reader on a journey through place: from the mountain towns of New Mexico, to a year in the Czech Republic, to Brooklyn, New York, to sixteen months on a mountaintop commune.
