Spotlight On Indie Author Alastair Henry
indie author Alastair Henry

I was a financial corporate type who followed the plan and took an early retirement, but within a year, the thought, "Is this it. Is this all there is?" was rolling around in my head. In search of an answer, I came out of retirement to live and work with a small First Nations band of Chipewyans in a remote location in Canada's far north. The experience was life changing and resulted in a paradigm shift in my spirituality, philosophy and aspirations for the future.

Awakening in the Northwest Territories

Book Two of the Boomers' Adventures trilogy. "Awakening in the Northwest Territories” is a humorous, intriguing and thought provoking memoir of the unusual life of Alastair Henry. Although the story spans sixty years: from growing up in England to emigrating to Canada by himself at 19 etc., the core of the biography takes place in the Northwest Territories. Discontented with the passivity of an early retirement, he went to live and work with a small native band (300 people) in a remote location in Canada’s far north, in search of adventure and a deeper meaning to life. Cultural differences and a challenging environment caused a paradigm shift in his spirituality and life philosophy. His “awakenings” – lessons learned are summarized at the end of the book. When he left the north, he changed his life’s direction and went to less developed countries in Asia and Africa sharing his skills and experience to help improve the lives of those less fortunate. His account of his experiences are chronicled in his second memoir - "Go For It -Volunteering on Roads Less Traveled."

Go For It- Volunteering Adventures on Roads Less Traveled

"Go For It" is Book Two in the Boomer's Adventures trilogy. Alastair and Candas, a couple in their sixties, met by chance one day, fell in love, and with a shared passion for life, set off on a new path of travel and adventure. We shed our material possessions and comfortable Canadian lifestyle to volunteer with local non-governmental organizations in Jamaica and Guyana, and in between assignments, backpacked extensively through Central America and S. E. Asia on roads less traveled. Their memoir, “GO FOR IT” describes: • what it’s like to be a volunteer in a less developed country. • how they adapted to their new environment by learning to accept what is. • what life lessons they learned from their immersion in a different culture. • where they went, what they saw and what they did.
