Spotlight On Indie Author Tony Richards
indie author Tony Richards

I've never written in just one genre. That route holds no interest for me. Sure, I started out wanting to be a sci-fi writer, but I soon branched out into ghost and paranormal tales, and as of date have had a good number of stories and novels published in those 3 genres and in crime fiction too, not to mention storytelling that fuses styles (sf/mystery, futuristic horror) and even a handful of PNR tales. My debut book 'The Harvest Bride' made the shortlist for the HWA Award for Best First Novel, and since then I have seen almost 20 more into print, including the 6 novels - so far - in my Raine's Landing supernatural thriller series. My latest full-length novel is a straightforward crime thriller, 'The Tribe' from CD Publications. More than a hundred of my short stories have appeared in such magazines as Alfred Hitchcock's, Asimov's SF, The Magazine of Fantasy & SF, Weird Tales, Midnight Street, and even Woman.

Here are my books

The 2nd Sherlock Holmes in the 21st Century

Sherlock Holmes -- still alive and with us after all these years -- is on the case again. He’s trying to solve what appear at first to be straightforward robberies and murders. But the game afoot on this occasion is a deadly and a very strange one. There are supernatural elements in the mix … sorcerers, apparitions, and even monsters to be dealt with. From the high towers of New York City to the fog-bound hills of San Francisco, from the floating cities of Hong Kong to the neon lights of Vegas, the world’s greatest detective finds himself being confronted by the biggest challenges of his extended life. And there’s no guarantee that he will win. “I would read an entire novel of modern-day Holmes from Tony Richards” – Flames Rising. “Richards is a master” - RT Book Reviews. “A terrific author. A unique and eloquent voice” - John Pelan. “Man, this guy can write. He has the power to introduce you all over again to the pleasures of reading good prose” - Ed Gorman. “A master of the art” - Black Static magazine. “An amazing voice” - James A. Moore. “Always first-class” - Ronald Chetwynd-Hayes.

Speak of the Devil (Raine's Landing #5)

It may look like a perfectly ordinary New England town, a little larger than most. But Raine’s Landing, Massachusetts, holds some very dark secrets. The real witches of Salem fled here just before the Trials of 1692, and the place has been full of magic – the good and the bad kind – ever since. And a curse hangs over the whole population … there are so many people because nobody born here can ever leave. It’s only early February, and the town should still be in the grip of winter. But the air has turned unseasonably warm and an unexpected thaw has come. And as the snows begin to melt back, bodies start to be discovered, murdered human corpses, each with strange ritual markings carved into their flesh. At first another serial killer is suspected, but it is not that. The markings are satanic ones. Somebody inside the town is practising black magic of the foulest kind. Demons have been summoned, dark spells cast, doorways opened into deeper realms. And then the Landing’s adepts start to be attacked. And with his sidekick, Cassie Mallory, unable to help him, ex-cop Ross Devries is facing the toughest and most brutal fight of his entire life. Because this time, he is battling the hordes of Hell. “Richards is a master at suspending disbelief and combining horror, fantasy and humor in a way that will mesmerize readers from cover to cover” – RT Book Reviews - sf/fantasy section. “When it comes to fiction for me, characters are first and foremost the most important factor in drawing me into the story, and Mr. Richards’ characters are absolutely wonderful. The action is fast and furious, with plenty of witchcraft, magic, and supernatural beings. His writing is atmospheric and spooky, once you start you will find it hard to put down” – The Monster Librarian. “The rest of us stand on the sidelines with eyes wide open at his audacity and wonder what he’ll do next” – Peter Tennant, Black Static magazine.

Three Dozen Terrifying Tales

The title says it all, doesn’t it? What more explanation is needed? There’s some gore, murder, and mayhem, but an awful lot more dark atmosphere and psychological horror in these tales, all of which have been published in magazines, anthologies, and e-zines. The horror critic Don D’Ammassa says: “I've read quite a bit of Tony Richards' work so I pretty much know what to expect - good stories most of which place an element of horror in an otherwise mundane context. The contrast is strikingly effective.” The stories are: ‘Too Good to be True,’ ‘Beautiful Stranger,’ ‘The Waiters,’ ‘The Spanish Portrait,’ ‘Birchiam Pier,’ ‘Hamadryad,’ ‘At the Church of St. Jack the Ripper,’ ‘The Crows,’ ‘The Cat, the Ladder, & the Man Mo Shrine,’ ‘Mr. Smyth,’ ‘Shadows,’ ‘By a Dark Canal,’ ‘The Black Lake,’ Headlamps,’ ‘Lightning Dogs,’ ‘Siafu,’ ‘The Moon Also Rises,’ ‘The Lords of Zero,’ ‘Child of Ice,’ ‘Misdirection,’ ‘Discards,’ ‘Night Game,’ ‘The Cure,’ ‘At the Circus of the Dead,’ ‘The In-Betweeners,’ ‘Non-Existent Cats,’ ‘The Brother,’ ‘Man, You Gotta See This,’ ‘The Sentinels,’ ‘The Irrigators,’ ‘Gone-Away Bay,’ ‘Streets of the City,’ ‘Our Lady of the Shadows,’ ‘After Dark,’ ‘Pages From a Broken Book,’ and ‘A Matter of Avoiding Crowds.’

Deadly Violet (Raine's Landing #4)

It may look like a perfectly ordinary New England town, a little larger than most. But Raine’s Landing, Massachusetts, holds some very dark secrets. The real witches of Salem fled here just before the Trials of 1692, and the place has been full of magic -- the good and the bad kind -- ever since. And a curse hangs over the whole population … there are so many people because nobody born here can ever leave. It’s late December now. People are getting ready for the holidays, scarcely guessing what is coming their way next. Because a psychic beggar girl in the town’s Victorian past has gotten hold of a magical jewel that massively expands her powers -- she has reached out with her mind through time itself, making contact with Raine’s Landing in the present day. The only problem is, she’s warped the fabric of reality by doing that. Rows of houses begin vanishing, with their occupants still inside. Bizarre creatures, some of them extremely dangerous, start to roam the streets. And if Ross, Cassie, and Doc Willets are going to stop their hometown from disappearing altogether, then they’re going to need an awful lot of help. "Deadly Violet just hums along, taking you at high speed to places of which you have never dreamed. In fact, I think (it) is the best Raine's Landing novel to date. Be sure to pick up a copy of this superb fantasy" -- The Deepening Review Site.

Dark Rain (Raine's Landing #1)

There’s something very strange about Raine’s Landing, Massachusetts. In the first place, there’s a problem getting in there … voices start up in your head, warning you to stay away. And then there’s that creepy looking mansion at the summit of the biggest hill, weird creatures roaming through its grounds. Not to mention the fact that the town’s buses operate without a sign of any driver. And that’s when you begin suspecting there might be some otherworldly force at work … like witchcraft, perhaps. Now Raine’s Landing has a brand-new visitor who’s not intimidated by that kind of power. He’s an ancient demon who has adopted human form. He loves to control people’s lives, and feeds on their fear. And when he starts his deadly games, not even the town’s adepts – magicians descended from the genuine witches of Salem – can stop him. So the job is left to ex-cop Ross Devries and his Harley-riding sidekick Cassie Mallory. They don’t have any magical skills, just their guns and fists and their sharp wits. But will those be enough? "An innovative, compelling novel of dark fantasy. I recommend it" – News from the Crypt. "It will keep you on the edge of your seat. A definite must read for those into dark fantasy, paranormal fiction, or just a good book" – SF Revu. "The narrative is never less than compelling as it hurtles towards a resolution. All that remains is to wait patiently for the sequel and find out what else Richards has in store for us" – Black Static Magazine.

Witch Hunter (Raine's Landing #6)

“But I am innocent, I tell you! I am not a witch!” “Well, we shall soon find out the truth of that. Prepare yourself for your ordeal.” Back in 1687, Verena Oakemont was put to death by the notorious witchfinder Thaddeus Firman. And – despite her protestations – she really was a witch, and a powerful one too, the daughter of a demon. Three centuries later, she’s escaped from Hell and returned to Raine’s Landing. Death has made her magic powers far stronger than ever, and it’s not merely the town that she wants to subdue. Her gaze is fixed upon the world beyond it. But that’s not the biggest problem Ross and Cassie have to face. Something even worse is coming in Verena’s wake, the servant of an ancient force that would destroy the Universe itself. And the only person who has any chance of standing in its way … is Cassie’s brand-new daughter, May. A vengeful witch. A brutal hunter. And a magically-empowered child. These are the ingredients for the most climactic Raine’s Landing adventure yet. “Will mesmerize readers from cover to cover” – RT Book Reviews. “The rest of us stand on the sidelines with eyes wide open at his audacity and wonder what he’ll do next” – Black Static magazine. “If you love the fantasy genre, like the Dresden Files, you will love this series as well!
