Ruth Francisco worked in the film industry for fifteen years before selling her first novel "Confessions of a Deathmaiden" to Warner Books in 2003, followed by "Good Morning, Darkness", which was selected by Publishers’ Weekly as one of the best mysteries of the year, and her controversial third novel, "The Secret Memoirs of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis". After her publisher deemed "Amsterdam 2012" too politically controversial to publish, she uploaded it to Kindle, and is now fanatical about indie publishing, with four new "indie" novels up on Amazon. She is a frequent contributor to "The Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine", and currently lives in Florida.

BOOK BREAK

The Pigtailed Heart Fiction - Crime, Mystery

In the gritty mean streets of 1940s Los Angeles, ex-detective Jack Clayton has few illusions—he knows all about L.A. corruption. Yet when the great defense lawyer Jerry Giesler asks him to track down witnesses for L.A.’s latest sensational murder trial, the murder of Doris Dazey by her husband, a prominent Hollywood doctor, he can’t resist.

As soon as he starts to investigate, people begin to die. Jack tumbles into a tangled web of deceit that takes him from the jazz dives of Central Avenue, to Venice Beach, to San Pedro, to Hollywood clubs catering to “twilight men,” and into the arms of a siren so dangerous she could set off the whole powder keg.

He uncovers a haunting parallel between the death of actress Thelma Todd and Doris Dazey, and finds connections to the L.A. crime syndicate, eugenics clinics, and international sabotage, all which threaten the pre-war efforts of the Roosevelt administration.

Based on a true criminal trial and years of research, this sweeping, rip-roaring saga lives and breathes the hardscrabble times of pre-war Los Angeles: glamour, gambling, political corruption, and the explosive appetites of a thriving young megalopolis.

Good Morning, Darkness Fiction - Crime, Mystery

Following her much-praised first novel, Confessions of a Deathmaiden (2003), Francisco delivers another outstanding stand-alone, a darker tale with some surprising twists. A Mexican fisherman makes a gruesome discovery on the beach not far from L.A.'s Marina del Rey: "I found the first arm. The second one washed up on Malibu Beach, seven miles north of here. The rest of the body must've gotten eaten by sharks." But whose arm? It would seem to belong to the alluring Laura Finnegan, who had a house on the beach and whom the fisherman used to admire through her window. Det. Sgt. Reggie Brooks of the LAPD is in love with Laura, as is real estate agent Scott Goodsell, who has asked her to marry him, but murder doesn't seem a possibility: Laura has quit her job and gone east to see her relatives. Or has she? Alert readers will suspect there's more going on than meets the eye, and further plot complications prove both serpentine and sanguinary. As in her previous novel, Francisco knows how to turn the screws: the adroit plotting and additional fillip at the end are sufficiently compelling to qualify this as one of the year's best mysteries.

Confessions of a Deathmaiden Fiction - Crime, Mystery

In the heart of modern-day Los Angeles, Frances Oliver practices the arts and skills of the deathmaiden. Four years of intensive training at the Institute for Eternal Living and membership in the Society of Deathmaidens have well prepared her for the role. But the woman who knows so much about helping the dying cross over is about to discover just how little she knows about life . . . when someone uses her—and all she stands for—to commit cold-blooded murder.

He’s is only a little boy, a Mexican child by the name of Tomás Gomez. Left in a persistent vegetative state by massive head trauma, he has been sent home from the hospital to die. Yet from the moment she touches him, Frances senses that Tomás is not brain-dead at all, but only too frightened of something or someone to wake up.

Elated at the possibility of bringing him out of his coma, she briefly leaves his bedside. It is a lapse in judgment that will haunt her for the rest of her life. For when Frances returns, she bears witness to Tomás’s final breath. And then, bursting in on her, a frantic doctor and his medics descend upon Tomás’s small body and spirit it away.

As a deathmaiden, Frances saw into the boy’s future. She knew that it wasn’t his time to die. Who would kill an innocent child and why? Filled with rage and aching regret, Frances vows to uncover the truth. It will be a shattering journey fraught with danger and betrayal that will take her from the sterile corridors of a state-of-the-art biogenetics lab to the dense jungles of Mexico and back. There she will learn what they never taught her in school: Instincts can fail you, passions can blind you, and evil can wear the most noble face . . .

Beach City Indigo Children / Young Readers

Buster, a happy-go-lucky boxer, runs the Venice West Café, a beat poetry and jazz club in Venice, California. Life is simple and good, until the evil land developer Ivana Moore schemes to pass a leash law and deprive the canines of their rights. Her plan is to confiscate their land and transform the artistic bohemian community into a luxury resort of condominiums and expensive boutiques.

The bulldozers and wrecking balls arrive. Terrified, the dogs flee for their lives. Homeless but not defeated, Buster and his friends come up with a plan to save Venice Beach.

Hungry Moon Fiction - Suspense / Thriller

In 2003, an amateur naturalist and self-proclaimed protector of the grizzly bear went to Kaflia Bay in Alaska to live with the grizzlies for three months. His girlfriend joined him. On October 6, the mangled remains of their bodies were found eaten by a grizzly.

What motivates a man to do something so foolish as to try to live with wild grizzly bears? Why would a woman follow him? Why would they stay beyond a time when any sane person would have left?

Told from three perspectives—man, woman, and bear—this fictionalized account of historical events takes the story into the realm of mythology to explore our most essential fears, and our most elemental drive—hunger. Man hungers for purpose, hungers for fame, hungers for God. Woman hungers for romantic love, for a love that will give her life meaning. What happens if the Man mistakes the grizzly for God, if the Woman mistakes the Man for her white knight?

The grizzly allows no such mistakes. The grizzly knows only the hunger in its belly.
