Haiku Notebook, Second Edition Poetry
View Dr Bill's bio page

In addition to the humorous poems on the Internet, haiku have literary roots in ancient Japan. Award-winning haiku poet W. F. Owen presents a primer for the serious-minded poet in this second edition of Haiku Notebook. The book is written in haibun style (prose combined with haiku), so readers can see the origins, themes and contexts of the poems. There are over 260 poems presented.

This book is part anthology of many of my best poems, part instructional guide especially for beginning haiku writers and part short stories or haibun to contextualize the poems. Of course, you can look at the full sample offered, but here is a brief passage from the book:

Growing up, many friends carried good luck objects in their pockets. One had a lucky penny, another had a rabbit’s foot and another packed a small wrench his mechanic dad gave him. As if to compete, some boys had pocketknives and one had a small nail clipper attached by a small metal chain to the belt loop of his Levi’s. I never saw him cut his nails. A red-haired kid carried a bent-up photo of his dad who had died in a car accident. I didn’t understand that at the time, but I wanted to be different, too. I decided to carry the foot from a squirrel I had shot. These objects were like friends that kept us company and preserved connections to people.

The only thing I kept when my mom died was the lucky Kennedy half-dollar I had given her to use on scratcher tickets. I didn’t want to say I wanted anything. Other coins continued to give comfort for a while longer.

Life Games Poetry
View Trine Daely's bio page

A collection of poetry written over a span of dark years in my life, sometimes with hope for the future, sometimes without. I wrote about the images in my dreams, my daydreams, my nightmares - think of it as a verbal expression of a painting in my brain, with all the variations you would expect from colorful to minimalist, strict verse to free verse.

I publish this in hopes that you will value content over formatting, and can find some light of your own in the darkness (or, if you prefer, some darkness in the light).

This is the journal of my dark travails as I came to accept the impending death of my mother, who passed away when I was sixteen, less than a month after my grandmother. I had been watching this happen since I was six, but coming to grips with the reality of it was something I had difficulty expressing until I started writing poetry.

Along that walk love was found, lost, found again, trust trampled, life expanded. I found my way through and learned to live again, trust again, and more importantly, to trust in myself. Here, I share that with you.

The Body Poetry
View Natasha Reyna's bio page

The human body is a storehouse for the organs, blood, and bones that convey our emotions. When one of these houses is really looked into, you'll find that humanity is really connected by common universals of feeling. Some of these universals are treacherous, surprising, and some are even heartwarming. As usual, they come from a place of truth in the poet's heart. Enjoy!

"The Heart of a Girl: an emotional journey from thirteen to thirty" Poetry
View Jane Madison's bio page

"The Heart of a Girl: an emotional journey from thirteen to thirty" is incredibly personal and special to me. Writing has always been the most effective way for me to express myself and pain has always been my greatest muse. These words are inspired by real events in my life. I feel the best are those that were written in a flash based on a sudden rush of passion, but I appreciate the more structured entries as well. If you’ve enjoyed my work, please “like” this book. If enough interest is generated I plan to publish the full, unabridged edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Poetry I've Come Across In Years, May 9, 2011
By Josh Wexler - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Unsolicited Poems (Paperback)
This is my new favorite book of poetry. I read it straight through the first night after I got it and couldn't stop reading it. I keep coming back to it, opening up to a random page and experiencing the thrill of the poems again. It's rare for me to find poetry that I can actually call thrilling. This is. Rowe's writing is so musical, and at the same time raw, gritty, and profane. His themes range from the lofty to the quotidian, from existential despair to fits of joy, and he writes about them all with equal mastery. The poems honestly sing of sacred love and primal lust, and stare heartbreak right in the eyes. They travel from New York to New Orleans to Mexico. They drink coffee and they drink wine and liquor and beer.

There is deep wisdom in this book, and it is communicated with visceral beauty. Get this book- you will be very happy you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly an American great of poetry, May 10, 2011
By m.m.harris - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Unsolicited Poems (Paperback)
David Rowe is the most influential poet currently living in New Orleans. His life, his writing and his presence are quintessentially poetic, vivacious and painfully beautiful. If, in one hundred years, the name of David Rowe is not uttered alongside the names of Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Hart Crane, then American culture and art will be truly dead.

The book is structured under eight themes: figures; nature; abstracts; love; haiku; creatures; childhood and darkwave.

Now, I will be honest & say I don't generally like poetry but I was given the opportunity to read this & as I enjoyed a previous book by this author I thought I would give them a chance. I went in with an open mind and I am so glad I did. Wow!

Bard Memorial Hospital Poetry
View Boblo's bio page

Poetry about hospital, doctors, patients? Why not?

The author's more than 25 years in hospital management form the backdrop for this work. The events described in some of these pieces may be hard for the reader to believe. While the subject matter is, of course, fictional, it was inspired by real happenings that he either witnessed personally or heard about. He has changed names and places, and has combined or compressed factual material to protect the identities of real people.

Most people think of hospitals in terms of doctors, nurses, therapists, x-ray and medical technicians, food servers, and housekeepers. They don't give much thought to purchasing agents, storeroom managers, pharmacists, secretaries, accountants, clerks, sterilization staff, boiler plant operators, painters, carpenters, photographers, messengers, administrators, social workers, and morgue attendants.

There are also Medical Records Rooms, Medical Libraries, Graphic Arts Departments, Mail Rooms, Copy Rooms, Computer Rooms, to name a few lesser known non-clinical departments. And let's not forget the volunteers who give generously of their time and money to guide, assist and sustain the hospital's operations and growth: the Boards of Trustees with lawyers, CPA's, business people; and the various Auxiliaries with homemakers, retirees, and teenage "candystripers."

Vignettes and poems about most of these characters can be found within the pages of "Bard Memorial Hospital" and should provide a familiar chuckle or twitch of recognition to anyone that was ever a patient or visitor to a modern hospital facility.
