Behind the Story: The Cloud Connection
By: nathanm  Published: 4/11/2011  Category: Writing
Share

There are a couple of core rules I used to guide me through the story.

Credible People:

I had to ‘see’ the characters as real people  so I based them around people I knew, tweaking personalities and appearances to make them unique. Being able to relate to them, have feelings about them, made them more real to me and easier to write about. In fact I learned a lot about them as the story went on.

The Situationists and Weathermen were both real political activist groups. Out of respect for The Situationists I reworked their principles and beliefs into a modern version. I also used the ebook to show my appreciation for the work being done by the men and women of the armed forces in their struggles and achievements to bring stability and democracy in dangerous and unstable countries. I reworked the Weathermen (a historically real political group) as an alliance of military veterans from real and fictional past operations, working to protect isolated and vulnerable communities around the world. A much needed force since what’s left of the military (after The Big Freeze) is already stretched to it’s limits and private military corporations are little more than organised mercenaries contracted by corporations and desperate governments.

Consequences and Responsibility.

Alister’s acquired his abilities due to innocent curiosity but over time it turns out the way he uses them begin to have dangerous consequences on his sanity. I didn’t want a character who has special abilities that came without consequences. Other key events in the ebook happen beyond his control but he finds himself responsible for dealing with them - and there are consequences for the ways he chooses to react.

Journey, search and discovery

The Cloud Connection isn’t just a science fiction adventure; it’s about a young man’s search for his mother across a climate ravaged environment. On the way he learns about the limits of his abilities, the ways he’s changed because of them, the impact of his actions on the lives of others and the real reasons for his mother’s disappearance.

The McGuffin: A solid reason

We all know that every ebook, like all other stories, has to have a plot enabling device. In The Cloud Connection, the McGuffin is Alister’s search for his mother. There are other sub-plots, stopping the carnage at the Eaton Centre for instance, but this intersects with the main plot. All the people, technology and action would be pointless if it never had a purpose.

Credible Science Fiction

One of the things I enjoyed most about writing The Cloud Connection was that it gave me the chance to make use of all the science and technology stuff I read about on the web and in the New Scientist. There’s so much amazing research being done and discoveries being made right now. Many are already in existence. The facial and body-movement recognition software in CCTV are the most obvious examples.

Most of the science fiction technologies in The Cloud Connection are a bricolage, combinations of two or more technologies that labs are currently researching into. I just put them together and tweaked them just a little to make them fit into the science fiction world of The Cloud Connection. In fact it was sometimes tough to decide what to include and what to leave out of the ebook.

I wanted The Cloud Connection ebook to have in it technology that was at least 50% believable; well, believable enough that the reader would be able to think - ‘I’ll go along with that, it sounds like the kind of thing they could develop some day’.

If you do a basic search for the kinds of technologies in The Cloud Connection ebook, you’ll find similar real world versions. What you’ll read about in the ebook is not as science fiction as you might imagine.

Nathan McGrath’s ebook The Cloud Connection is currently available through the Apple iStore and other major online ebook sellers. He is currently working on Lightning Seed, the explosive second Cloud ebook.

Part 2 of/included in Intersections:

When the child was finished with her very first nursing, William lifted her from Suzanna’s arms, held the babe close to him and walked her around the enormous master suite of their New York mansion. The sun was streaming through the windows between the pale blue silk draperies, shining onto the silk draped bed where Suzanna rested watching them with a peaceful smile on her face.

William watched his Suzanna as she drifted off to sleep. Good he thought, get some rest my beloved. You worked so hard giving us this beautiful gift today. You deserve a good rest. Then looking back at sweet, little Claire he knew no other day in his lifetime could bring him this same joy.

He sat in the chair beside Suzanna’s bed and just held the babe, rocking her for the next two hours while her mother rested.

Neither of them knew that the future would not be so kind. Much of the joy would vanish; their standard of living would disappear. Murder would bring loss of love and safety. The fact that they could not see what lay ahead was perhaps the greatest gift they had this day, but that was a blessing of which they were unaware."

The Bookie's Runner Biography
View Brendan Gisby's bio page

Bob Dylan wrote the classic song 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' and thereby unforgettably marked the passing of an otherwise insignificant character in the movie 'Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid'.

Brendan Gisby has written this utterly beautiful novella to honour the short life of his father, a man of seemingly as little significance.

The story is narrated with haunting subtlety, rhythm and depth of feeling by his teenage son as he takes a bus ride back to school for the first day of a new term where he will have to announce his father's sudden death and deal with the resultant reactions without bursting into tears.

He also has to come to terms with the fact that, on reflection, there is a huge amount he doesn't know about his father and that all he is really left with are snippets of personal memories.

Make no mistake, 'The Bookie's Runner' is a modern masterpiece and, in writing it, Brendan Gisby has not only honoured his father, he has ennobled him.

REVIEW:
This book is a refreshing outlook on todays mediumship. If you're one like me that has been from pillar to post looking for answers or training upon training and getting nowhere fast I think you will find the answer in this book. You might like the answer and then again you might not , but wouldn't you rather know where you stand instead of being told nonsense all the time and in many cases paying cash out for courses that just don't work?

This book is a black and white honest approach which has been a long time coming and with luck will do its job in balancing the playing field and getting rid of all the dead wood amongst this industry. I am not going to go into detail why you should take this book seriously as that is a journey you need to make for yourself but I would say this is a hidden treasure which is yet to be fully recognised. A lovely read and a book best purchased in paperbook.... why? because you will keeping going back to it all the time and it's a keeper. My view shortly the publishing world is going to wake up to this author in a big way. Regards Michael Thorpe
